City of Durham Replaces Century-Old Waterlines Along West Main Street

New Waterline Installation Will Reduce Traffic to One Lane in Each
Direction;

Residents Urged to Use Caution When Traveling Through Project Area

DURHAM, N.C. - Beginning mid-February, the City's Water Management
Department will begin replacing century-old waterlines on Ninth Street
and West Main Street, which will impact traffic on both streets
throughout the course of the eight-month project.

The City will begin work on Ninth Street between Perry and Main streets
in mid-February; this portion of the project is expected to take up to
four weeks. Connections along Iredell Street, South Buchanan Boulevard,
and Perry Street will also be replaced during the course of the project
and will be completed by September 2012.

When work begins on West Main Street in mid-March, the road will be
closed in short sections while the new waterline is installed. Although
West Main Street will remain accessible throughout the City's project,
traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction to limit
disruptions to residents, businesses, and vehicular traffic.

"This project will be done as quickly and efficiently as possible to
minimize impacts on residents, businesses, and motorists in the project
area," said Don Greeley, director of the City's Water Management
Department. "The Main Street waterlines are a vital component of the
City's physical assets which supports our residents' health and quality
of life. When completed, this project will improve the reliability of
the City's water system in this area."

Once the City's waterline project is completed in this area, the North
Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will replace the West Main
Street Bridge, which is located over Campus Drive adjacent to Duke
University's East Campus. In order to maintain both water quality and
water availability in the distribution system, the City's new waterline
must be installed before the old waterlines underneath the bridge can be
taken out of service. The West Main Street Bridge replacement will
require a full closure of West Main Street between Broad Street and
Buchanan Boulevard and detours will be provided.
