Waste Industries Donates Garbage Truck to Help Durham's African Sister
City

Waste Industries to Present Truck to Assist Solid Waste Program in
Arusha, Tanzania

Fast Facts:

*         Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell, City Manager Tom Bonfield, Solid
Waste Management Director Donald Long, and a representative from Sister
Cities of Durham, Inc. will be in attendance to discuss the City's
partnership to help Durham's sister city, Arusha, Tanzania, acquire a
new garbage truck.

 

*         Waste Industries President and Chief Operating Officer Harry
Habets will donate a garbage truck to Sister Cities of Durham who will
receive it on behalf on behalf of Arusha, Tanzania.

 

*         Brady Surles, president of the board of directors for Sister
Cities of Durham, along with the current co-chairs and founder of the
Arusha Committee, will also be in attendance to accept the donated
garbage truck. After the ceremony, the donated garbage truck will then
be shipped to Arusha, Tanzania.

 

*         The City of Arusha, Tanzania currently owns several vintage
1980 model garbage trucks that serve more than 10 collection sites
around the city.

 

*         Long visited Arusha, Tanzania in December 2010 to provide
assistance in designing a curbside waste collection and convenience
center service, and serves as a technical advisor on a grant application
in which Arusha, Tanzania was awarded $115,000 from Sister Cities
International and the Gates Foundation. 

 

*         Sister Cities of Durham, Inc. is a non-profit organization
promoting international friendship, intercultural understanding, and
economic development.

 

*         The City of Durham has four sister cities around the globe,
including Durham, United Kingdom; Kostroma, Russia; Toyama, Japan; and
Arusha, Tanzania.
