City of Durham Promotes National "Fix a Leak Week" March 12-18

Fixing Leaks Helps Conserve the City's Water Supply

DURHAM, N.C. - Water lost through drips and leaks impact water efficiency and these overlooked minor repairs in homes and businesses result in more than 1 trillion gallons of water wasted from leaks each year.

As part of the "We're for Water" campaign sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) WaterSense program, the City of Durham Water Management Department is encouraging residents to inspect all plumbing and water devices and make necessary repairs to help increase water efficiency now through March 18, 2012 in celebration of National Fix a Leak Week.

"Leaks can account for more than 10,000 gallons of water in an average home every year - enough water to wash nearly 10 months worth of laundry," said Al Nelson, conservation program coordinator with the City's Water Management Department. "As a WaterSense partner, we are encouraging residents to find and fix leaks to save water in our community."

These useful tips will help residents increase water efficiency in their homes:

§ Check for leaks. Look for dripping faucets, showerheads, and fixture connections. Also, check toilets for silent leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring into the tank and seeing if it appears in the bowl before flushing. Don't forget to check irrigation systems and spigots too.

§ Twist and tighten pipe connections. To save more water without a noticeable difference in flow, twist on a WaterSense-labeled faucet aerator.

§ Replace the fixture if necessary. Look for WaterSense-labeled models, which are independently certified to use 20 percent less water and perform as well as or better than standard models.

The Water Management Department continues to offer the WaterSense High Efficiency Toilet (HET) rebate program to assist the Durham community in water savings. For program details, visit www.DurhamSavesWater.org. Residents may also purchase high-efficiency showerheads for $3 each from the Customer Billing Services Division of the Water Management Department, located in City Hall at 101 City Hall Plaza.
