Durham's Continuum of Care Providers Win New HUD Funding

New Grants Fund Housing for Homeless Households

DURHAM, N.C. - Homeless individuals and families in Durham will be
receiving more help now thanks to new grant funding for Durham's
Continuum of Care Program.

The City of Durham's Community Development Department was notified that
the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded a
total of $474,074 in new grant funding for two providers within Durham's
program to continue to help end homelessness in Durham. The following
organizations and programs received the new funding:

* Durham Housing Authority's Goley Pointe Development: $368,073

This mixed-income development will provide affordable, permanent, and
supportive housing to chronically homeless families and individuals.
Located in Northeast Central Durham, the development will provide a
minimum of 28 beds for chronically homeless households. Goley Pointe
consists of 20 energy-efficient units, 12 of which will be reserved for
chronically homeless families and individuals with incomes at or below
50 percent of the area median income. The remaining eight units will be
housing for people earning 80 percent or below of the area median
income.

* Housing for New Hope's Streets to Home Initiative: $106,001

This initiative will help 10 chronically homeless individuals or
families transition from the street into homes, and will be supported by
Housing for New Hope's Homeless Outreach Team and its Assertive
Engagement Team. Chronically homeless households will access permanent
housing through leases with local landlords and receive the support they
need to maintain the housing and move towards economic self-sufficiency.

According to Reginald Johnson, interim director of the City's Community
Development Department, HUD's funding will provide critically needed
permanent supportive housing for individuals and families and reflects
and supports the Obama Administration's strategic plan to prevent and
end homelessness. "These awards recognize the fine work of these two
organizations and will enable them to do even more to provide housing
for Durham's chronically homeless residents," Johnson said.

This week, HUD awarded nearly $201 million to support 731 new local
homeless programs across the country, including $5.94 million for new
homeless programs across North Carolina. In late 2011, HUD awarded $1.47
billion to renew funding to more than 7,100 existing local homeless
programs operating across the U.S, including $426,837 for six Durham
projects. The renewal grants provide operating support for housing and
supportive services in 2012. The grants announced this week will support
new local programs never before funded by HUD. In total, Durham was
awarded $900,911 by HUD in the 2011 Continuum of Care homeless grants
competition.
