Durham County Library Hosts an Afternoon with Frances Wright
in Celebration of Women's History Month

Program: Meet Frances Wright: Fighter for Freedom
Date: Saturday, March 31
Time: 3 p.m.
Location: Main Library
300 N. Roxboro St.
Cost: Free and open to the public

About: Durham Library Foundation presents a visit from Frances Wright on Saturday, March 31, at 3 p.m. at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro Street. Dr. Sally Ann Drucker will portray Frances Wright in a dramatic characterization of this early 19th-century feminist and abolitionist.

Wright was ahead of her time in many ways. She was the first woman in America to speak to large, mixed (male and female) audiences and one of the first to edit two newspapers. She started a commune to educate and free slaves, and a "Hall of Science" to educate the working people of New York. Although Wright didn't start a movement, she influenced later fighters for women's suffrage. Some of Wright's ideas are still controversial today.

The discussion that follows will be led by Drucker, who previously participated in programs on Emma Goldman, Rosie the Riveter and Lucrezia Borgia.

For more information about the program, contact Joanne Abel at 560-0268.
Durham County Library provides the entire community with books, services and other resources that inform, inspire learning, cultivate understanding and excite the imagination. For more information, visit your local library or visit us online at durhamcountylibrary.org.
