Durham Seeks Resident Input on Fair Housing Survey

Survey Results to be Used to Address Fair Housing Concerns

DURHAM, N.C. - The City of Durham is seeking resident input in
identifying fair housing concerns through an online, confidential survey
available now until April 30, 2012.

As part of its effort to update the Analysis of Impediments to Fair
Housing Choice, the City's Community Development Department has
developed this survey, now available at
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DurhamAI, for residents to complete the
questionnaire regarding their fair housing concerns.

Fair Housing concerns include any act of discrimination or barrier that
might limit the housing choices of families and individuals. As part of
this analysis, which must be updated every five years, the City is
looking for actions or omissions on the local level that constitute
violations, or potential violations, of the Fair Housing Act; are
counter-productive to Fair Housing Choice; or have the effect of
restricting housing opportunities on the basis of race, color, religion,
sex, disability, familial status, national origin, or sexual
orientation.

As a participating jurisdiction, the City must certify that it is
affirmatively furthering fair housing, which is a requirement by the
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as a condition of
receiving federal funds. As part of the certification process, the City
and its planning consultant firm, Urban Design Ventures, LLC, are
scheduling a series of informal discussions, meetings, interviews with
numerous housing and social service agencies, and several City
departments in addition to the Fair Housing Survey for residents.

Once completed, a copy of the draft analysis will be available for a
30-day public comment period in May 2012, followed by a public hearing
in June 2012.

For more information about the analysis or the online resident survey,
contact Wilmur Conyers, federal programs coordinator for the City's
Community Development Department, at (919) 560-4570, ext. 22277 or by
email at Wilmur.Conyers at DurhamNC.gov.
