Morris Street Waterline Improvements May Impact Traffic in Downtown
Durham

Street to Close for Three Weeks Between West Corporation Street and Hunt
Street

DURHAM, N.C. - Beginning April 30, the City of Durham Water Management
Department will begin replacing 80-year-old waterlines on Morris Street
from West Corporation Street to Chapel Hill Street, which will impact
traffic throughout the course of the three-month project.

Next week, the City will begin installing new waterlines along Morris
Street amid the existing construction near Measurement, Inc. The project
will begin at West Corporation Street and work southward toward Morgan
Street. At times, parking lots will not be accessible at Measurement,
Inc. and other businesses along this section of Morris Street, but will
be accessible from secondary entrances on Roney and Hunt streets. In
addition, a water connection replacement will reduce traffic to one lane
along West Corporation Street during the first phase of the project.
This phase of the project is expected to take up to three weeks.

"This project is being done as quickly and efficiently as possible to
minimize the impact on residents, businesses, and motorists in the
project area," said Jerry F. Morrone, engineering manager for the City's
Water Management Department. "The Morris Street waterlines are vital
infrastructure supporting our businesses and economy, and when
completed, this project will improve the water system's reliability and
accommodate potential growth in this area."

The second phase of this waterline replacement will close Morris Street
between Hunt and Roney streets. Access will be maintained to the
Measurement, Inc. parking lot via Roney Street. The third and final
phase of the project includes installing new waterlines on Morris Street
between Morgan and Chapel Hill streets. The road will be reduced to one
lane and closed intermittently while the new waterlines are installed.
Although this section of Morris Street will remain accessible throughout
most the City's project, some extended closures will occur on Sundays to
limit disruptions to residents, businesses, and vehicular traffic.

The three phases of the project are expected to be completed by the end
of July 2012.
