Durham Hosts "Less Is More" Truckload Sale May 26

Compost Bins, Rain Barrels, and Truck-bed Tarps for Sale at Reduced
Prices

DURHAM, N.C. - It's now easier than ever to save money and help Durham's
environment thanks to the upcoming "Less Is More" Truckload Sale for
compost bins, rain barrels, and truck-bed tarps.

This rain-or-shine event will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2012, from 8
a.m.to 2 p.m. at Northgate Mall in the parking lot of Sears, located at
1058 W. Club Blvd., Durham.

Keep Durham Beautiful, Inc., the City of Durham's Solid Waste Management
Department as well as Norseman Environmental, University Ford, and
Northgate Mall are co-sponsoring this event to offer these cost-saving
and environmentally friendly supplies in large quantities at a reduced
price to the general public on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Customers interested in viewing a display of the rain barrel, compost
bin, or truck-bed tarp that will be for sale on May 26 should look for
the Keep Durham Beautiful truck inside Northgate Mall beginning May 18.

No pre-orders are available for this event. Compost bins and rain
barrels must be purchased by check or credit card. No cash will be
accepted except for the truck-bed tarp donation. The following products
will be available for purchase:

* Norseman Environmental Systern Rain Barrels ($58 includes tax)

* Earth Machine Compost Bins ($47 includes tax)

* Truck-bed Tarps sponsored by University Ford ($1 cash donation
for truck owners only)

According to Tania Dautlick, executive director of Keep Durham
Beautiful, families and businesses that use all three of these products
will see a significant impact in roadside litter, their water bills, and
the environment. "Improperly covered truck or cargo loads contribute to
16 percent of roadside litter. A properly secured load will protect
belongings and reduce roadside litter. Reducing litter, in turn, helps
the economy of our community. Residents may receive one tarp per truck
for a suggested $1 donation and demonstrations will be made to help
truck drivers learn how to properly secure their truck loads," Dautlick
said.

Dautlick is also encouraging residents to purchase and use rain barrels
since collected rain water ultimately helps protect Durham's streams and
lakes. "Rain barrels collect the rain water from your roof and
downspouts. Catching and using rain water helps protect our streams and
lakes. It helps runoff soak in close to the source rather than pick up
toxins and harmful nutrients on its way to local waterways," Dautlick
said. "This creates a healthier ecosystem, cleaner rivers and lakes, and
reduces the cost to prepare drinking water. At the same time, homeowners
will reduce their water bills when they water their plants and trees
with collected water."

According to Larrisha McGill, waste reduction coordinator for the City's
Solid Waste Management Department, compost bins allow homeowners to
recycle leaves, grass clippings, and vegetable kitchen scraps to create
natural mulch for gardens and lawns. "The removal of these recyclables
from the waste stream that goes to the landfill is both cost-effective
for residents and is an ecologically sound way to enhance a garden. Each
compost bin comes with a home composting handbook that provides
information on how to compost as well as assembly instructions," McGill
said.
