I suspect discussing race is the same as why it's hard to talk about 
abortion, gun control, economic policies, sexual orientation: One or 
both sides claim to have the Truth, and label the other side classists, 
baby killers, sinners, etc. The issues of race are no different.

It will be easier when both sides are willing to accept and validate 
each other's perspectives. I'm not saying we have to accommodate the 
KKK. Yes, I have "white privilege", but I've worked damn hard and made 
good choices to get where I am from where I started. I know my 
achievements are not simply due to my being white. I will disagree 
vehemently with anyone saying otherwise, and I expect my perspective to 
be accepted in any conversation of racial issues, just as I will work to 
accept others' perspectives. If it's not a one-way, we-have-the-truth 
conversation, then I'ld be thrilled to participate in a conversation on 
racial issues.

Especially if there's good beer.
