Southern Portion of Durham American Tobacco Trail to Close June 11
Trail Under Construction from N.C. Highway 54 to Chatham County Line for
Approximately 13 Months
DURHAM, N.C. - Durham's American Tobacco Trail users should take note
that beginning June 11 the trail will close between N.C. Highway 54
southward to the Chatham County line for a 13-month period. In addition,
trail parking on Fayetteville Road near New Hope Church will be closed
for the duration of the project.
The existing trail from Renaissance Parkway to the Chatham County line
will reopen by March 2013, while the new trail from N.C. Highway 54 to
Renaissance Parkway and the bridge construction is scheduled to be
completed by July 2013. The trail is closing to ensure public safety
during this construction project and American Tobacco Trail users should
note that the trail will not be passable during this period.
"The American Tobacco Trail spans 22 miles across three counties and
this project will complete the missing links of this important
transportation corridor as well as improve users' access and
connectivity," said Ed Venable, contracting manager with the City's
Public Works Department. "In order to get this project done as quickly,
efficiently, and economically as possible, we must close the entire
portion of the trail."
The project includes paving a 10 foot-wide asphalt path on 2.8 miles of
existing trail; installing 1.4 miles of new trail, and installing a
bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Interstate 40.
