"The goal is for everyone to experience reading in a way that is enjoyable and meaningful throughout the summer months," said Karlene Fyffe, the library's Youth Services Administrator. "We want to invite every individual and family to dream big and set reading records this summer while having fun."

>From June 15 through August 11, Summer Reading Club participants will be encouraged to read at their own pace and log the time they read or are read to. Participants will be eligible to earn a variety of weekly, monthly and grand prizes throughout the summer. To encourage families to make reading a priority, every Durham County Library will offer several special programs and activities to engage and motivate families to read together.

Featured programs include meeting J. Mark Boliek, author of The Mahogany Door; costume making with Holly Cleeland, author of Glue and Go Costumes; Bright Star Children's Theatre performances of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow; Flow Circus skill toy workshops for tweens and teens; live music shows by Big Bang Boom Band; The Disenchanted Dragon theatrical performances presented by Rags to Riches Theatre; and GlaxoSmithKline's "Science in the Summer" camps.
Children ages 0-11 who read, or are read to, for at least 15 minutes each day will be eligible to receive prizes for 10 days, 20 days, 30 days and 40 days of reading. Children who reach the 40-day level will be eligible for the grand prize drawing. Teens 12-17 must read for a total of 20 hours during the summer. In order to be eligible for the grand prize drawing, teens must also submit at least one short "BookTweet" book review. Adults 18 and over will receive credit for every book read. Adults who read four books between June 15 and August 11 are eligible for the grand prize drawing entry as well.
On August 10 and 11, the library will reward everyone for a summer of reading fun with the system-wide grand finale "Celebrations of Reading." Featured activities will include more games, music, crafts and refreshments to celebrate the summer's excitement. Summer Reading Club grand prize winners will be announced at the Main Library during a special drawing on August 13.
