Durham Hosts Southside Groundbreaking July 17

 

What:              Southside Revitalization Project Groundbreaking
Ceremony

 

Who:               City of Durham Community Development Department,
McCormack Baron Salazar, Inc., and the Southside Neighborhood
Association

 

When:             Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at 9:30 a.m.

 

Where:            Former Rolling Hills Site 

East Lakewood Avenue 

Durham, N.C. 27707  

Once on Poinciana Drive, the event will take place at the end of the
Woodbriar Cul-de-Sac. Event parking will be along the existing streets
inside the former site.

 

Fast Facts:

*         The Southside Revitalization Project area encompasses
approximately 125 acres located south of the Durham Freeway and just
north of North Carolina Central University. The City's objective is to
stabilize the neighborhood and encourage long-term private investment
through the creation of new, high-quality rental and homeownership units
serving a broad range of incomes.  

 

*         To commemorate the beginning of construction of the first
phase of the rental development, the City's Community Development
Department is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony next week. Refreshments
will be served and residents of Southside are encouraged to attend.

 

*         Speakers at this event include City of Durham Mayor William V.
"Bill" Bell; Southside Neighborhood Association President Marie Hunter;
U.S. Congressman David Price; North Carolina Department of Commerce
Assistant Secretary Henry C. McKoy; U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development Greensboro Field Office Director Curtis L. Davis; North
Carolina Housing Finance Agency Board of Directors Vice Chairman Joseph
R. Parker; McCormack Baron Salazar, Inc. Senior Vice President Karl
Schlachter, and City of Durham Citizens Advisory Committee Chairman
DeWarren K. Langley.  

 

*         The first phase of this $20 million project will consist of
119 rental units and 13 "live-work" units located at Lakewood Avenue and
Roxboro Street. McCormack Baron Salazar is the developer for the
mixed-income project which will include affordable, workforce, and
market-rate units.  

 

*         Construction of new homeownership units will also occur on the
west side of Roxboro Street led by the Center for Community Self-Help
and other homebuilders. Assistance to help existing homeowners
rehabilitate their properties is also being provided.

About the Community Development Department

The City of Durham's Community Development Department is responsible for
coordinating the City's housing resources and various housing assistance
programs as well as promoting affordable housing by working with
investors and community housing development organizations. The
department also provides assistance with the abatement of lead in older
