About: Before the 2012 Summer Olympic Games begin, Durham County Library and UNC-TV present a screening of the documentary film Jesse Owens. The film, featuring footage of Owens' dramatic victories at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, will be screened on Thursday, July 26 at 7 p.m. at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St.

Jesse Owens entered the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany on April 2, 1936 as a 22-year-old son of a sharecropper. By the games' conclusion, he emerged as one of history's most remarkable Olympians.

Years later, Owens recounted his frustrations that day. "I'd never had time to be a crusader," Owens recalled, "but when the hour came for me to compete...I was angry because of the insults that Hitler and the other German leaders had hurled at me and my Negro teammates on the Olympic squad."

The film reveals many of the challenges Owens encountered in the face of Nazi racism. Yet, he matched the world record of 10.3 seconds in the 100-meter dash and dramatically beat a German competitor in the broad jump, setting another Olympic record that stood for 24 years. Replacing a Jewish sprinter left out of the Hitler games, Owens went on to win his fourth gold medal as part of the 400 meter relay team. Also portrayed is the unlikely relationship forged with Owens' German rival Carl "Luz" Long as well as his struggle to find his place, despite his Olympic achievements, in a United States still wrestling to overcome its own racism.

The screening is made possible by funding from Durham Library Foundation. To learn more about this program, contact Joanne Abel at 919-560-0268.
