Fast Facts:

* The Bull City Connector is in its second successful year of
operation, transporting more than 10,000 passengers each week on
average. This free service connects Duke University and Duke Medical
Center to downtown Durham and Golden Belt, and the many restaurants,
retail and entertainment venues along the way.

* To enhance the Bull City Connector experience, Durham Area
Designers led an effort, starting in August 2010, to create unique art
for bus shelters along the Connector's route.

* In consultation with the Durham Arts Council, Durham Area
Designers issued a call for qualifications of artists statewide. The
selection committee, which included representatives from the City of
Durham, the Durham Arts Council and the Town of Chapel Hill, selected
four artists from seven qualifications packages that were submitted. The
artists are Sharon Dowell of Charlotte; Al Frega of Durham; Christopher
Vespermann of Cary; and David Wilson of Apex.

* Selected art incorporates references to Durham's rich history
and unique culture, including scenes of blues musicians, a colorful map
of the city, and references to Durham's tobacco heritage.

* Two bus stop shelters, located at Oldham Towers and the Durham
County Courthouse, are being unveiled on Wednesday, August 1 at 9:30
a.m. Shelters located near or on Ninth Street, Duke Street, Brightleaf
Square, West Village, Five Points, and the Durham County Human Services
Complex are slated for installation over the next 12 months.

* For more information about this shelter art project, contact
Durham Area Designers President Steven Gaddis at (919) 618-2596.
