PlayMakers Visits Durham County Library to Discuss Production of Tony-Award Winning Red

Time: 7 p.m.
Location: Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St.

About: Members of the PlayMakers Repertory Company will visit Durham County Library to discuss their upcoming production of the Tony Award-winning play Red, directed by Vivienne Benesch. The play portrays the life and work of Mark Rothko, acknowledged as an abstract expressionism pioneer and one of the great artists of the 20th century. The discussion, led by Jeffrey Meanza, PlayMakers' Associate Artistic Director, Scenic Designer Jan Chambers, and Costume Designer McKay Coble, will take place on Monday, September 10, at 7 p.m. at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro Street.

John Logan penned Red in a manner that, according to Variety, "...sends American painter Mark Rothko<http://www.nga.gov/feature/rothko/> into battle with his demons in this electrifying play of ideas, and the artist's howls are pure music." In 2010, Red was awarded the Tony for "Best Play," along with five other honors.

PlayMakers' discussion of their production promises to provide a glimpse into Rothko's artistic studio, as the artist maneuvers amid his professional and personal crises, particularly the "eternal struggle between art and commerce." In addition, this library event serves as a sneak preview of the performance, prior to the company offering its rendition to Durham audiences under the direction of seasoned theatre veteran Vivienne Benesch.

This program is made possible by funding from Durham Library Foundation. For more information, contact Joanne Abel at 919-560-0268.
