My daughter just started 6th grade at Lowes Grove Middle School, and we are so impressed with the principal and the teachers we have encountered.

As you probably know, the school is over 80% free and reduced lunch and has no PTA. So we need all the help we can get...and I'm beginning to search it out (I've already blown my budget buying supplies for her classrooms).

Right now, if any of you have any books or novels appropriate for 3rd through 8th grade that you can donate to the language arts teacher(s), I would love to be the medium through which these are provided. They certainly don't have to be new. As an indication, my kids both read 'The Hunger Games' via school last year, and they are 8 and 10. Sex, sadism, and excessive cursing seem to be the things we are trying to avoid.

You can drop the books by my house at 301 Spring Garden Drive, Durham, NC or at Lowes Grove (front office,4418 South Alston Ave. Durham, NC 27713, behind the South Regional Library that is just off Hwy55).

Or you can agree to be the downtown friend on whose front porch I will ask/inform people to leave their donated books, so that I can pick them all up at one location about a week from now.

If you have the means and desire to help further, colored computer paper, colored card stock, pencils, tissues, ziplock sandwich bags, hand sanitizer, color magic markers (not the washable kind), index cards, colored sticky notes, and bandaids are all on the teachers' wish lists. I'll be happy to take any of these donated items along with the books and take them to Lowes Grove.

Thanks so much for your help!
Melissa (Rooney)
