Durham Sets Strategic Plan Community Meetings

Three Opportunities for Residents to Give Feedback on the Next Phase of the Strategic Plan

 

DURHAM, N.C. - Durham residents who want to provide feedback on the next phase of the City of Durham's Strategic Plan will now have an opportunity thanks to three upcoming community meetings.

 

Approved by the City Council in April 2011, the Strategic Plan is the City's business plan, which establishes priorities and objectives for the organization and defines selected actions and activities within the financial limits set by the City Council. As part of the process to annually update the Strategic Plan, the City is reaching out to Durham residents and other community stakeholders for input on the plan's existing goals and where the City should be focusing its efforts.

 

According to Strategic Initiatives Manager Jay Reinstein with the City's Budget & Management Services Department, an annual assessment of the plan will enable the City's leadership to understand the numerous and changing environments of the community so the plan can continue to meet the needs of residents and the actions and resources required to make that happen. 

 

"In order to achieve consistent and planned results, it is essential that all organizational efforts are pointed in the same direction. We want to understand what our residents think, their concerns and viewpoints, as well as their ideas regarding the health and well-being of their neighborhoods and the safety and security of our shared community," Reinstein said.  "To ensure continued success, this organization must stay in touch with our residents so we can continue to integrate the plan into annual budgets and daily operations and stay on track with sound measurements of progress."

 

The community meetings are set for the following dates and times:

·         Saturday, September 22, 2012, from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

North Regional Library, 221 Milton Rd., Durham

Discussion Topics: Safe & Secure Community and Thriving, Livable Neighborhoods

 

·         Saturday, September 29, 2012, from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

South Regional Library, 4505 S. Alston Ave., Durham

Discussion Topics: Strong & Diverse Economy and Stewardship of the City's Physical Assets

 

·         Wednesday, October 3, 2012, from 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Holton Career & Resource Center, 401 N. Driver St., Durham

Discussion Topics: Strong & Diverse Economy and Safe & Secure Community

 

Residents who wish to review the bi-annual Strategic Plan Progress Report can do so by visiting the City's website at http://www.DurhamNC.gov/StrategicPlan/Goals. The interactive site allows residents to easily view progress made to date on existing citywide measures and initiatives as well as view positive and negative trends. The progress report delves into each of the City's five goals ― Strong & Diverse Economy; Safe & Secure Community; Thriving, Livable Neighborhoods; Well-Managed City; and Stewardship of the City's Physical Assets.

About the Budget & Management Services Department

The Budget and Management Services Department is responsible for preparing, implementing, and monitoring the City's annual operating budget as well as the five-year revenue/expenditure projections for all City government services. The department also provides operational and organizational studies as identified by the City Council, City Manager's Office, and department staff. Guided by the City's Strategic Plan, which the department established and maintains, the department helps to ensure that the City of Durham is a well-managed city by working with City agencies to build and implement performance measurement monitoring and evaluation. The department is also responsible for preparing the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), coordinating the City's process for petition and City-initiated annexations, conducting resident satisfaction surveys, and evaluating departmental achievement of City goals and objectives.
