"Durham On The Move" Community Event October 6

Free Youth Diversity Carnivaaal and Parade to Celebrate Diversity,
Healthy Food, Strong Families & Physical Fitness

DURHAM, N.C. - Residents and families looking for a way to enjoy and
celebrate Durham's diversity should mark their calendars now for the
first-ever "Durham On The Move" event featuring a Youth Diversity
Carnivaaal and Parade.

"Durham On The Move" is an initiative between the City of Durham
Neighborhood Improvement Services Department and Durham County
Government, in partnership with 17 other local businesses and
organizations. This free event, set for Saturday, October 6, 2012, from
11 a.m. to 5 p.m., is designed to bring a multitude of fun and
interactive activities to the community to encourage thriving, livable
neighborhoods and a safe and secure community, which are key objectives
in both the City and County's Strategic Plans.

According to Constance Stancil, director of the City's Neighborhood
Improvement Services Department, the event will showcase what makes
Durham such a special place by celebrating and bringing together
residents from all walks of life. "Our community is legendary for its
cultural diversity and as a special place where inclusiveness is valued
and cultivated," Stancil said. "Attendees at this event are going to
enjoy different types of entertainment while have access to different
activities and life-saving information. I believe all who join us will
see for themselves why Durham is such a great community to call home."

To start things off, there will be a parade beginning at the
intersection of North Corcoran and West Main streets in downtown Durham
from 11 a.m. to noon. Led by City of Durham Mayor Pro Tempore Cora
Cole-McFadden, who is the grand marshal for this event, the parade will
feature young bikers, walking clubs, the tooth fairy, McGruff, youth
groups, a fire truck, electric cars, floats, and step-and-dance teams.
The parade will end at 807 E. Main St, where parade participants and
onlookers can then take part in the Carnivaaal festivities at 923
Franklin St. beside the Golden Belt Historic District in downtown
Durham.

Carnivaaal activities will include book bag drawings, Zumba, kids yoga,
a children's activity table, face painting, child ID's, inflatable
bouncers, and vendors selling fresh produce and offering free
information on fair housing, bike safety training, CPR training, fire
safety, and crime prevention as well as information on healthy
lifestyles. There will also be a full slate of entertainment from youth
groups, mimes, dance groups, and line dancing with a wide array of
music. In addition, there will be food, art and coffee for sale from a
variety of local vendors.

event sponsor or Carnivaaal vendor, contact Robin Dixon at (919)
