"Durham On The Move" Saturday
Featuring Youth Diversity Carnivaaal and Parade to Celebrate Diversity,
Healthy Food, Strong Families & Physical Fitness
What: "Durham On The Move" Community Event
Who: City of Durham Neighborhood Improvement Services
Department and Durham County Health Department in partnership with 17
other local businesses and organizations
When: Saturday, October 6, 2012, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Parade: 11 a.m. to noon
Carnivaaal: Noon to 5 p.m.
Where: Parade begins at the intersection of North Corcoran
and West Main streets and ends at 807 E. Main St.
Carnivaaal festivities and physical fitness
activities will take place at 1009 Franklin St., which is located behind
the Golden Belt Complex
Fast Facts:
* Residents and families looking for a free way to enjoy and
celebrate Durham's diversity should mark their calendars now for
Saturday's kick-off of "Durham On The Move" initiative featuring a Youth
Diversity Carnivaaal and Parade.
* City of Durham Mayor Pro Tempore Cora Cole-McFadden, who is
the grand marshal, will lead the parade which features young bikers,
McGruff, youth groups, electric cars, floats, and step-and-dance teams.
* Carnivaaal and physical fitness activities will include Zumba,
kids yoga, a children's activity table, face painting, child ID's, Wool
E. Bull, inflatable bouncers, and vendors selling fresh produce as well
as free information on fair housing, bike safety training, CPR training,
fire safety, and crime prevention plus information on healthy
lifestyles. There will also be a full slate of entertainment from
modeling, mimes, a reggae band, and line dancing with a wide array of
music. In addition, there will be food, art, and coffee for sale from a
variety of local vendors.
* Parade parking will be available in the parking garages and
lots at Mangum and Chapel Hill streets, Church and E. Main streets, and
Parrish and Church streets. Carnivaaal parking will be on Taylor, Elm,
Franklin and Morning Glory streets. Greater Zion Wall Church's parking
lot, located at 721 Hopkins St., will serve as additional parking as
well. All parking is free and open to the public.
