Youth Crime & Gang Involvement Report Released; Save-A-Lot Opens in
Northeast Central Durham

Report on Youth Crime and Gang Involvement Released

There's mixed news to report regarding youth crime and gang involvement
in Durham. A recent report by the Gang Reduction Strategy Steering
Commission shows City and County efforts focused on addressing
disconnected youth between the ages of 16-24. One of the areas of most
concern is the connection between those young people, gang activity, and
crime. Gang Reduction Strategy Manager Jim Stuit offers a look at youth
crime and gang involvement in Durham, as well as progress that is being
made in addressing those areas.

New Grocery Store Offers Boost to Northeast Central Durham

Northeast Central Durham is getting a significant boost from a grocery
store. Save-A-Lot opened the chain's newest store on September 27 at 812
Liberty St. The store offers grocery and household items and fills a
much-needed void for fresh fruits, meats, and vegetables. Store and City
officials explain how the store also represents an investment in the
community.

Durham Ranks Second in State for Tax Collections

There's more reason to take pride in the way Durham manages its tax
dollars. The City ranks second in the state for collecting the taxes it
was owed by businesses and residents last year - meaning the services
based on that revenue can continue to be provided at a high level. With
just over $129 million in taxes billed and just over $128 million
collected, Durham has a 98.75 percent collection rate.

Durham Goes to New Heights for Fire Prevention

The Durham Fire Department is going to new heights in honor of fire
prevention month. On October 9 firefighters will stage a roof top
rescue, as well as host additional activities at Northgate Mall. The
event will go from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. with activities geared toward helping
families develop at least two ways out as possible escape routes in case
of fire. For more information about the event, visit
