Durham County Library Hosts Award Winning Play
in Support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

About:  Durham County Library wraps up Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Anita Shontel Woodley, also known as Mama Juggs. Woodley will present an afternoon of music and storytelling as she channels the voices of three generations of African-American women within her family. They struggle with bra stuffing, breastfeeding and last stage breast cancer in the setting of the Oakland, California projects. The program will take place on Sunday, October 28 at 3 p.m. at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St.



Actress and playwright Woodley wrestles with these issues through various theatrical styles, including a cappella negro spirituals, comedy, straight talk, improvisation and audience interactions. She plays three different characters in Mama Juggs (Grandma Suga Babe, Mable-Ree and Anita) without the help of costume changes or scene breaks.



Woodley, based in Chapel Hill, NC, is the 2012 Durham Arts Council's Emerging Artist in Drama. Formerly she worked as an award-winning national journalist for Public Radio's The Story with Dick Gordon. In 2011, she won the Grand Prize at the M.A.L.I. Women's Arts Conference in Austin, Texas. In 2010, after tracing her maternal roots to the Tikar people of central Africa, she brought Mama Juggs across the Atlantic and was the first in her family to reconnect with their ancestral tribe.



Written as a promise to her mother - who died of breast cancer before 50 - the play seeks to challenge cultural taboos and stereotypes surrounding breast health and body image. This program is for mature audiences only.
