The good news is that you still have almost a week to do your early voting, and the polls are open longer all week. The bad news is that some polling places have run out of the nice big "I voted today" stickers and just have the smaller "I voted" stickers. It looks like almost 1/3 of the registered voters in Durham County have already voted.
The hours this week are 9AM to 7PM, Monday to Friday, and 8AM to 1PM on Saturday. If you want to avoid lines, some ideas are:Vote early in the day, say before 11 AM.Vote early in the week -- the lines are usually the worst the last three days, and lots of people will wait for better weather. Vote late in the day on Monday or Tuesday, before anyone else figures out that the polls will be open later.Vote at Duke, which has had the lightest turn-out.
Straight-party voting is an option that lets you vote for whatever candidates your favorite party has chosen to run. So if we had a Dr. Seuss Party, you would be voting for Horton, Lorax, and so on if you chose it as your straight party choice. A couple things to be aware of:In NC, straight party doesn't cover the presidential race and the non-partisan races on the back.If the Seuss Party had no candidates in the Dog Catcher race and you chose to vote straight party for the Seuss Party, you would not be casting any vote in that race. You can "override" your straight-party choice in individual races. So if you voted for the Dr. Seuss Party but chose Big Bird over the Once-ler for Commissioner of Agriculture, you would still be voting for Seuss Party folks in the other races. In a multi-seat race like the Board of County Commissioners, if you choose to over-ride your straight party vote for one candidate, you have to make all your choices individually in that race. So you would choose Thing One, Thing Two and Santa Claus in that race.
Repeating a couple notes from last week:
They are being really serious about no cell phones or other electronic devices in the voting places. If you need a list of candidates you want to vote for, make a paper copy to bring into the voting booth with you.If your name on the voting rolls doesn't match your name on your driver's license or social security records, going to early voting is a good chance to get this fixed just in case someone decides we need to do some massive cleaning up of the rolls. Let the person at the computer know right away that you will need to update something; once you get further into the process of getting your ballot, making changes gets more complicated for the person at the computer. We all have favorite places to find out about candidates, but a couple non-partisan ones are:http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/03/29/1967716/2012-voters-guide.html
UNC-TV: http://www.ncvoterguide.orgA few people are being surprised about which races they get to vote for -- the district lines are pretty complicated in Durham, and a lot of it is now in Rep. Butterfield's district. To find out whether you are registered and see your sample ballot, go to https://www.ncsbe.gov/VoterLookup.aspx?Feature=voterinfo and enter your name.

Additionally, the building offers voters with accessibility needs more space inside and outside the voting location.
