Deputy Chief Curia Named Interim Fire Chief

 

DURHAM, N.C. - City Manager Tom Bonfield has announced the appointment
of Deputy Chief Daniel Curia as the interim chief of the Durham Fire
Department. 

 

Curia will serve in this role until a permanent fire chief is selected
and begins employment with the City of Durham. Curia fills the interim
chief spot left vacant by Chief Bruce T. Pagan, Jr., who will retire
December 1, 2012.

 

Curia joined the Durham Fire Department in 1990 and served as a
firefighter until 1997. From then until 1999, he served as a fire
technician, achieving the rank of fire captain in 1999. As a captain, he
remained in the Operations Division through his 2003 promotion to
battalion chief. In 2008, he was promoted to the rank of assistant chief
of operations. As deputy chief, Chief Curia has provided direct
oversight for the Fire Administration, Operations, Prevention, and
Training Divisions.

Curia holds an associate degree in Fire Protection Technology, a
bachelor's degree in Public Administration, and a master's degree in
Leadership with an Emphasis in Disaster Preparedness and Executive Fire
Leadership. Additionally, Curia is a graduate of the National Fire
Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program, holds Chief Fire Officer
Designation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence, and is a
member of the Institution of Fire Engineers.
