As the holidays draw nearer, I find it is harder for me to not give money to the
people standing at the stoplights, though I make it a point to give money to
organizations that help such people and not to the people themselves. Sometimes
I hand them a breakfast bar or pack of pretzels, if I happen to have something
like this in my car.

I was wondering if members of the INC listserv can help me compile a list of all
the organizations that are available to homeless people and people in need,
including programs available for veterans and including the address and contact
information for all organizations.

I'd like to compile a one page document that I can print and hand to people
asking for help at street corners or anywhere I encounter them, really.

Of course, I will pass on the file to the INC listserv in case others want to
follow suit.

Thanks for your help!
Melissa (Rooney)

Dear Melissa

In past years these people have had a pdf one page handout ... I can't find
it on the website now ... but it is a "resource" collection on the Durham
Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness

I've always thought that such organizations should "sell" tickets or
coins (or something like that) to donors (ten "tickets" for $20 or
whatever). Donors could hand these out to folks at the stoplights, an
these folks could only redeem them at the foodbanks, shelters, etc. If
those folks threw them away, the organizations still benefit and the
donor benefits from trying.

Just a thought. Does something like that already exist?

I feel guilty for not moving as fast as possible on the Durham Can You
Spare A Change collaboration, but it is actually moving. I could use some
help, so contact me off line.

It will eventually supply all that seems needed here as far as
information.

Please stay the course Melissa, cash given directly is still a step
backwards.

When I meet these people on the corner, the challenge for me is to treat
them as people. Engage in conversation. Tell them I contribute to the
Rescue Mission and TROSA and ask, do they know about them? They all do get
lists of such agencies before they can get their license to be on the
corner. So: Getting out of my comfort zone to talk with these folks and
not simply give them $1 or $5 on the go, which allows them to stay on the
street.

I somehow walked off without the Housing for New Hope contact information -
where I can send volunteers to help next week.
Can someone please type that info in and send it out electronically so we can
all send it to others?

Thanks,Susan Sewell

I'm a fan of the Durham senior center.
