About: Durham County Library will host a screening of the 1948 promotional film, Negro Durham Marches On, and a conversation about life in Durham's African-American Hayti neighborhood. The screening will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 15, at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St.

The film, commissioned by the Durham Business and Professional Chain (an African-American business organization), features Hayti's business district, which was centered at the intersection of Fayetteville and Pettigrew streets. In 1948 the district offered all kinds of goods and services to the area's residents. From a barbershop, to a drugstore, to a movie theater, to an undertaker-African Americans could get much of what they needed in life without suffering the indignities of patronizing white-owned businesses during the Jim Crow era. This showing features a newly discovered copy of the film that is much sharper and clearer than previous versions.

This program is sponsored by Durham Library Foundation. For more information, contact Joanne Abel at 919-560-0268.
