City Offers Transportation Improvement Program Update

Planning for the 2014-2020 Transportation Improvement Program is
entering its final phase. The program serves as the regional and state
guidebook for determining which transportation projects will be
completed when and with what funding. Durham has several projects funded
for construction in the state's draft program. Transportation Planner
Ellen Beckmann explains which projects will be completed.

West Knox Street Culvert to be Stabilized

Work to stabilize the West Knox Street culvert is ready to begin. Nearly
$499,000 will be spent to stabilize the culvert where South Ellerbe
Creek passes beneath West Knox Street. A number of problems have been
noted within the culvert over the past couple of years, which has
resulted in its listing as a priority maintenance project. The repairs
are expected to take three months to complete, but West Knox Street will
remain open during that time.

Project Begins to Improve Sewer Lines Over South Ellerbe Creek

A significant sewer line improvement project that is about to get
underway will focus on two lines leading into the North Durham Water
Reclamation Facility. The lines run parallel to Club Boulevard and cross
Ellerbe Creek before entering the facility. The structures that
currently carry the lines over the creek have been eroded and will be
replaced with a stronger and more durable support. The $1.3 million
project will also include improvements to the existing sewer lines to
prevent future deterioration.
