Happy holidays!

It's the season for sharing. And as tough as life is for the clients who depend on Urban Ministries of Durham for help, they are some of the most generous people I know. They'll share a garment or food they need themselves with a shivering stranger -- for one thing, they know vividly how that person feels. But there's more to it.

This week I learned that a group of clients decided to raise $20 among themselves to purchase a flock of chicks for a village in a third-world country, via an international charity. Their gift will provide eggs for the village for years. Our clients contributed pennies and dimes and crumpled dollar bills, raised enough for one flock and are now halfway to a second. Volunteer chaplain Susan Dunlap points out that the cents each person put into the middle were a huge sacrifice, but the gift proves that every person has something to share. The clients know just how grateful the people in Africa or Southeast Asia will feel knowing someone from different circumstances thought of them, cared for them, reached out to help them.

They know it because Durham neighbors like you, in very different circumstances than theirs -- or maybe more similar than one would assume -- volunteer and give out of care for them. When you share through Urban Ministries of Durham, it not only helps people with material needs but touches, heals, and inspires them -- and, I believe, begins to change the whole world. Below are a few ways you can share again. Will you? 'Tis the season.

Sincerely,

Patrice Nelson, Executive Director
	* Match our clients' generosity and give $20 or more right now.
	* Instead of buying presents your loved ones don't want or need, follow our clients' lead and give an alternative gift. Through shopUMDgifts.com, UMD's new site, you can sponsor a homeless man or woman in our shelter, or cover the cost of meals in our Community Cafe, for example, in the name of the people on your holiday gift list.
	* Buy and send Holiday Honor Cards, limited edition greeting cards that tell people special to you that you've made a donation in their honor to support the Community Shelter, Food Pantry, Café, and Journey programs. We ask a minimum donation of $5 per card. Contact Christine Powers at (919) 682-0538 ext. 221 or at cpowers at umdurham.org. Or learn more here.

UMD's entry in the Triangle Tree Challenge was created by a group from Summit Church. Help us win $5,000 by clicking this photo and voting for Tree 19. Or text TREE19 to 49688.
