City of Durham Employees Raise $110,000 for Local & National Nonprofits

City Remains the Highest Fundraising Municipality in the Triangle

DURHAM, N.C. - Giving back to the Durham community is nothing new for
City of Durham employees, and 2012 was no exception since employees
exceeded their fundraising goal by donating more than $110,000 to local
and national non-profits, remaining the highest fundraising municipality
in the Triangle.

Each year, the City conducts its annual 7 Stars Employee Giving
Campaign, which allows employees to donate to the nonprofit of their
choice through a payroll deduction. The goal for 2012 was to raise
$100,000, which was exceeded, with the majority of the $110,000 coming
from individual employee pledges of more than $85,000.

According to City Manager Tom Bonfield, the 2012 campaign was so
successful because of the dedicated employees that volunteered their
time and efforts to coordinate events, distribute information, and
encourage their co-workers to participate. "We had a great group of
employees that served as Strategy Team members to manage the campaign as
well as departmental liaisons who coordinated each department's
efforts," Bonfield said. "All of the employees who gave - whether it was
their time, talent, from their paychecks, or all of the above - truly
exemplify this organization's culture of service. The City is fortunate
to have such an outstanding and caring group of employees that go above
and beyond their job duties to help those less fortunate, not only in
our community, but across the country."

In addition to the payroll deductions, City employees also raised money
through departmental special events. Each department hosted and
coordinated at least one special event, such as the City of Durham Golf
Tournament hosted by the Technology Solutions and General Services
Departments;  the Neighborhood Improvement Services Department Fish Fry;
the Budget and Management Services Department Chili Cook-off; the
City-County Planning Department Monster Dash; and Durham Parks and
Recreation's Durham Bulls Game Night. In all, these special events
raised close to $25,000 to further support the campaign.

According to Michelle Burger, chairwoman of the 7 Stars Employee
Strategy Team, the annual campaign supports a variety of local and
national non-profit organizations, all of which impact the Durham
community. "There are five Federations that participate in our campaign:
America's Charities, Community Health Charities, Community Shares,
EarthShare, and the United Way of the Greater Triangle," Burger said.
"Employees can choose to donate directly to the Federations, the
individual charities that the Federations represent, one of the
participating independent agencies, or any non-profit organization of
their choice."

According to Burger, City employees contributed the most in 2012 to the
Durham Rescue Mission, John Avery Boys & Girls Club, Inc., Habitat for
Humanity of Durham County, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and
the American Red Cross Central N.C. Chapter.
