Durham's 2013 Point-in-Time Count Results Announced February 22

Annual One-Night Count Documents Number of Homeless People to Help
Durham Develop and Implement

Effective Housing and Service Programs

DURHAM, N.C. - On Friday, February 22, 2013, the results of the January
2013 annual Point-in-Time Count will be announced, providing an official
tally of Durham's one-night count of people who were unsheltered,
staying in an emergency shelter, or living in transitional housing
dedicated to serving homeless people.

A press conference on behalf of the Durham Continuum of Care, the City
of Durham, and Durham County Government officials is scheduled for
Friday, February 22 at 10 a.m. at Healing with CAARE, Inc., 214 Broadway
Street in downtown Durham.

In addition to announcing the official tally, perspectives on how the
count changed from 2012 will also be provided. In 2012, Durham's
Point-In-Time Count documented 698 homeless people in Durham, including
79 children and 63 unsheltered homeless adults. The total of 698 was a
record high after 652 people had been counted in 2011, and 675 people
were counted in 2010.

Local news media representatives, people who are or have been homeless,
and all concerned about homelessness in Durham are invited to attend the
press conference. For more information about this year's Point-In-Time
Count, contact Minnie Forte-Brown, chair of the Point-in-Time Count
Planning Committee, by email at minnie.forte-brown at dpsnc.net or by phone
at (919) 682-7393.

About the Annual Point-in-Time Count

Each year, the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD)
mandates that communities across the nation conduct a count of homeless
people staying in shelters and transitional housing annually in the last
ten days of January and a count of unsheltered homeless people every
other year. HUD uses Point-In-Time Count information from around the
nation to report to Congress annually on how many people across the
nation experience homelessness, to better understand who and why people
are homeless, and to design and implement federal programs to assist
homeless people with housing and the support services they may need to
maintain their housing. For more information, visit
