Youth Work Program Now Underway; City & County Employees Get Heart
Healthy

 

DTV8's "City Hall This Week" will debut a new show tonight at 8 p.m.
Hosted by Senior Public Affairs Specialist Amy Blalock, this show will
feature the following highlights and other topics of interest. You can

FOX 50/Durham JobLink Career Expo Offers Employment Help to Jobseekers

Hundreds of jobseekers are a step closer to finding employment - thanks
in large part to the FOX 50/Durham JobLink Career Expo. The event was
held from February 15-21 and included four days of workforce-related
workshops for both employers and those looking for a job. The expo
culminated with a career fair that gave jobseekers a chance to leave
their resume and to meet with potential employers. The event was
sponsored by FOX 50 and the JobLink Career Center.

 

Mayor's Summer Youth Work Program Offers Opportunities to Durham Youth

The City and its partners are recruiting applicants for the Mayor's
Summer Youth Work Program. The program offers youth ages 14-21 the
opportunity to gain work experience and develop skills through summer
employment with government agencies, nonprofits, and private sector
businesses. Office of Economic and Workforce Development Youth Program
Coordinator James Dickens explains more about what the program is and
why it's important for Durham and its youth.

 

City Takes Over Stream Restoration and Stormwater Quality Projects

The City is taking over the protection and maintenance of two stream
restoration and stormwater quality projects. The projects were among
five that had been the responsibility of the State, but which have now
been handed over to the City. The Ellerbe Creek stream restoration at
the Hillandale Golf Course and the Third Fork Creek stream restoration
in Forest Hills Park both provide numerous water quality benefits and
work toward efforts to comply with the Falls and Jordan Lake rules. A
contract of $85,000 was approved by the City Council to support the
maintenance of the projects.

 

City and County Employees Walk to Stay Heart Healthy

City and County employees are learning what they can do to stay heart
healthy and to even save the lives of other people. A one-mile Healthy
Heart Walk was held on February 20 to stress the importance of regular
exercise in order to maintain a healthy heart. The event also helped to
kickoff the City-County Joint CPR Initiative, which offers free CPR
training for all interested employees so they can help save a life if
needed. The initiative is an important part of both the City and
County's strategic plans.
