Hosted by Senior Public Affairs Specialist Amy Blalock, this show will
feature the following highlights and other topics of interest. You can

Durham Police Department's Annual Crime Report Shows 23-Year Low

The police department's annual crime report is offering an encouraging
look at efforts to fight crime in Durham. The 2012 report shows that
Part 1 Index Crime, which is the total of Part 1 violent crime and Part
1 property crime, is at a 23-year low. While violent crime was up
slightly from 2011, property crime was at its lowest level since 1988.
Chief Jose Lopez Sr. takes an in-depth look at the numbers as well as
other department accomplishments.

Angier-Driver Streetscape Project Enters New Phase

The Angier-Driver Streetscape Project is making a huge leap forward. The
City Council approved a $3.9 million construction contract for the
project. It includes street demolition and construction; replacement of
electrical, water, sewer and storm water utilities; installation of
streetscape and landscaping; and traffic signals and decorative
lighting. The streetscape project is part of an effort to revitalize the
Angier-Driver corridor.

Citizen-Petition Sidewalk Improvements Ordinance Approved

A new City ordinance allowing for citizen-petitioned sidewalk
improvements has been approved by the City Council. The policy allows
for two options for petitions. The first will be a petition for
improvements for sections of sidewalk that already lie within the
DurhamWalks! Pedestrian Plan, but are not fully funded. If a sufficient
petition is received, the sidewalk would move to a higher priority in
the plan with an assessment rate of $35 per foot with an eight-year
payback period. The second option will be for sidewalk improvements that
lie within the city limits, but are not currently on the DurhamWalks!
Pedestrian Plan. With these petitions, 100 percent of the actual cost of
the improvement would be assessed against the abutting properties.

Coffee with Council Sessions Continue to Be Held Throughout March

The City will host three Coffee With Council community meetings
throughout March for anyone who wants to offer input on the 2013-2014
budget. Information on when and where the sessions will be held is
available on the City's website at
http://durhamnc.gov/Pages/NNDetails.aspx?detailId=327.
