Construction on Angier-Driver Streetscape Set to Begin

Construction on the much-anticipated Angier-Driver Streetscape is set to
begin. Residents and stakeholders in the project got a chance to review
the final design and construction plans during a neighborhood meeting on
April 11. The project includes new pavement, curb and gutter, sidewalks,
landscaping, underground and overhead utilities, and street lights - all
in a streetscape design similar to downtown. Construction begins this
month and is expected to be complete in October 2014.

City Assesses Ability to Meet Demand for Industrial Land

The City is assessing its ability to meet the projected demand for
industrial land over the next 22 years. A recent report looking at
Durham's ability to support more industrial uses found that out of the
17,000 acres of land that are zoned for industrial use, only 1,600 acres
meet the current criteria for such use. Senior Planner Laura Woods
explains why that is the case.

Events Planned to Celebrate Earth Day

A couple of City-wide events will be held the weekend of April 20-21 to
celebrate Earth Day. The first is an E-Waste Recycling and Paper
Shredding event that will be held on Saturday, April 20 at Durham County
Memorial Stadium from 8 a.m. until noon. Unwanted paper documents and
nearly all electronic devices with a cord will be accepted. Durham's
Earth Day Festival will be held on Sunday, April 21 from noon-5 p.m. at
Durham Central Park. Participants will get to take part in a variety of
"green" activities, including a parade and kids area; learn about green
practices and products; and enjoy great music and food. Admission to
both events is free.

Durham Named Tastiest Town in the South

Durham has secured yet another title for itself - Tastiest Town in the
South. Southern Living Magazine made the announcement during a news
conference on April 9. Durham was chosen through its inclusion on the
magazine's list of Top 10 Tastiest Towns in the South in January. After
a national online voting process, Durham emerged as the winner against
competitors such as New Orleans, Charleston, Miami and Memphis. Southern
Living Travel and Features Editor Jennifer Cole explains what makes
Durham such a tasty town.
