We know that you are well aware of the challenges that come with finding skilled talent for the positions in your organization – which ultimately impacts your bottom line now and in the future. We recognize these challenges too and want to help ensure you have the highest qualified workers available to your business.

The Durham YouthWork Internship Program is a public-private partnership that is cultivating the talents and skills of Durham’s youth since the workforce of tomorrow starts today. This year-round initiative will train youth to be ethical, dedicated, and proactive employees through education-supported, real world workplace experience. The program will link your business with youth who are committed to becoming the leaders of tomorrow’s workforce. This year’s program will also build on past successes with new enhancements, including focused pre-employment training in critical thinking/problem solving, oral and written communications, and much more.

You can help shape the workforce that your business needs by participating in this program to train new talent. The small investment you make provides big dividends, not only providing your company with an inexpensive temporary employee, but also potentially training the workers your business needs in the future.

The program runs for a minimum of six weeks starting in July after a week-long intensive pre-employment training provided by the program. Employing a youth ages 14-21 for a 6 – 8 week, 30 hour per week assignment from late June to early August would cost your business anywhere from $2,400 to $3,600, depending upon the salary of the position and actual hours worked.

If you are willing to commit to employing at least one youth through this program, please contact us by May 1, 2013. For details and your opportunity to shape your company and this community’s future, please contact James Dickens at (919) 560-4965 or by email at SummerYouth2013 at DurhamNC.gov.

By hiring a pre-screened and pre-trained youth, you are investing in shaping the workforce of tomorrow. We invite you to take advantage of this great opportunity to build a talent pipeline for your business and help make Durham a better place to live, work and play!

Sincerely,

Mayor William V. “Bill” Bell, City of Durham

Chairman Fred Foster, Jr., Durham County Board of Commissioners

Chairwoman Heidi Carter, Durham Public Schools Board of Education
