Assistance and Incentives Program Available for Potential Southside
Homeowners

The City and its partners are working to help make homeownership
affordable for potential residents of the Southside community. The U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development requires that at least 51
percent of the homeownership units that are being built as part of the
Southside redevelopment project must be sold to and occupied by
households with incomes at or below 80 percent of the area median
income. In order to make those homes affordable for the targeted buyers,
the City has developed a homebuyer assistance and incentives program.
Community Development Director Reginald J. Johnson explains how the
program will work.

City Chooses Homebuilders for Southside Redevelopment Project

The companies that will be building homes on the first 48 lots in the
Southside neighborhood have been chosen. B. Wallace Design and
Construction and Andrew Roby General Contractor were approved by the
City Council to build on the lots primarily located along Hillside
Avenue, South Street, and Scout Drive. The project includes construction
of single-family homes, grading, landscaping, and installation of street
trees.

Updated Strategic Plan Now in Place for Durham

The City has an updated strategic plan in place to guide it over the
next three years. Durham's first strategic plan was adopted in 2011 with
five primary goals identified. The City Council voted on April 15 to
adopt an updated version, which reflects some changes as well as new
objectives, measures, and initiatives. Strategic Initiatives Manager Jay
Reinstein explains what the primary changes are and how they will
enhance the plan even further.

"Pub Bikes" Now Allowed in Durham

"Pub bikes" are now allowed to operate on Durham's city streets. The
City Council approved an amendment to the City's open container
ordinance, which paves the way for passengers to consume beer and wine
while they pedal. The bike is essentially a non-motorized device with
four wheels, steering for a driver, eight to 12 passenger seats, and
pedals. It is allowed to operate at a maximum speed of 15 miles per
hour.
