New “City Hall This Week” Begins June 14
Final 2013-2014 Budget Set for Approval June 17; Spraygrounds & Outdoor Pools Now Open

DTV8’s “City Hall This Week” will debut a new show tonight at 8 p.m. Hosted by Senior Public Affairs Specialist Amy Blalock, this show will feature the following highlights and other topics of interest. You can also watch this new episode on demand at http://www.YouTube.com/CityofDurhamNC.

Final 2013-2014 Budget Approval Set for June 17
The City Council has considered input from residents and is now prepared to vote on the final 2013-2014 budget. The City held its first E-Town Hall Event on June 3 during the Council’s regular meeting. Residents had a chance to send in their comments and questions through email, on the City’s Facebook page or Twitter feed, and even by video submission on the City’s YouTube Channel. A public hearing was also held that same night for those who wanted to attend the meeting in person. The final budget is set to be approved on June 17.

Durham Fire Department Graduates New Recruits
Durham has 19 new firefighters. The recruits graduated on May 31 from a 30-week academy and are now officially firefighters with the Durham Fire Department. All of the recruits graduated with certificates in firefighting, hazardous materials response, and intermediate-level for EMS.

City Installs Rain Garden at George Watts Montessori Magnet School
The playground at George Watts Montessori Magnet School has a new feature. In honor of National Public Works Week, volunteers from the City’s Public Works Department installed a rain garden at the school on May 29. Stormwater and GIS Services Public Education Coordinator Laura Webb-Smith explains how the garden will help to improve the water quality in nearby Ellerbe Creek.

Durham Spraygrounds and Outdoor Pools Open for Summer
The City’s spraygrounds and outdoor pools are open for the summer. The spraygrounds are located at Forest Hills, Edison Johnson, and East End Parks, as well as the Hillside sprayground at 1221 Sawyer Street. They’re open through September 15. The City’s outdoor pools are the Hillside, Long Meadow, and Forest Hills pools. They’re open through August 16.
