City Council Approves 2013-2014 Budget
Durham's 2013-2014 balanced budget is now in place. The City's $376.5 million spending plan includes a $1.80 monthly solid waste collection fee for capital needs; a $10 per month parking fee increase for parking lots and decks; a $1 special event parking increase; and water and sewer as well as stormwater rate increases. A copy of the approved budget will be available on the City's website by June 30 at http://DurhamNC.gov/ich/as/bms/Pages/Home.aspx.

Economic Development Initiative Results in New Kitchen for Community Center
The Lyon Park Community Center is gaining a new commercial kitchen thanks to a partnership between Calvary Ministries and the City. The kitchen is an economic development initiative that will be paid for with a $91,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It will be used for culinary arts training and to prepare meals for special programs and events. Calvary Ministries will oversee the construction of the kitchen and the purchase of equipment. The City will use grant funds to reimburse the organization.

Downtown Durham, Inc. to Continue Partnership with City
Downtown Durham, Inc. (DDI) will continue its work with the City to provide economic development services to downtown. The City Council approved a $160,000 funding agreement for the organization to operate economic development programs for downtown in the coming year. DDI Chief Operating Officer Matthew Coppedge explains what the organization's goals are for downtown.

Much-Needed Streetscape Improvements on the Way for Ninth Street
A public-private redevelopment agreement will soon result in some much-needed streetscape improvements for Ninth Street. The $807,000 agreement between the Regency Company and the City will involve both private investment and public infrastructure improvements. Those improvements will be funded through new tax revenues generated by new development in the area. As part of the agreement, Regency will be responsible for completing certain minimum private investment while also implementing public streetscape improvements to be paid for by the City.
