The Citizens Advisory Committee has one (1) position vacant with a term
expiration of June 30, 2014.  To apply, complete the attached application
and email your application to Laverne Brooks, Senior Executive Assistant to
the City Clerk at laverne.brooks at durhamnc.gov. Individuals appointed may
serve two consecutive terms (each term is three years).   Applications are
due by 5PM on Monday, July 29, 2013.  

 

The CAC is responsible for working to preserve and improve the quality of
life for citizens of Durham.  The CAC proposes, monitors, reviews and make
recommendations to the City Council and Board of County Commissioners on
expenditure of entitlement funds, housing & community development needs, and
neighborhood stabilization & revitalization; and facilitate citizen
participation in programs/activities that are financed with entitlement
funds to improve housing quality & affordability and economic opportunities
for low-and-moderate income families and homeless persons. 

 

 

Additionally, the CAC evaluates applications and makes annual
recommendations to the Durham City Council and the Durham Board of County
Commissioners concerning the allocation of Community Development Block Grant
(CDBG), HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME) and Emergency Shelter
Grant (ESG) funds to sub-recipients.  

 

The CAC also provides an initial evaluation, and ranks and recommends
applications pertaining to the Continuum of Care Grant Program and other
homeless initiatives to the Homeless Services Advisory Committee (HSAC).
Attached is the 2012 Continuum of Care Applications for New Project Funding
Evaluation & Recommendation Report prepared by the CAC for the HSAC, which
demonstrates a sample of the type of work performed by the CAC.

 

Additionally, the CAC receives regular updates and provides input on the
Southside Revitalization Project.

 

The CAC consists of fifteen (15) members appointed by the City Council and
Board of County Commissioners.  Twelve (12) members are appointed by the
City Council and three (3) members are appointed by the Board of County
Commissioners. 

 

The CAC meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 6pm in the Conference
Room of the Department of Community Development located at 807 E. Main
Street, Durham, NC 27701, Golden Belt Building 2, Suite 200. The CAC holds
Special Meetings when necessary to efficiently and effectively conduct
business that arises in-between regular meeting.  The CAC only holds
meetings when there is business to conduct.

 

Applicants residing in predominantly low-to-moderate income neighborhoods or
historically targeted areas such as Lyon Park, West End, Walltown, Gattis
Street, Morehead Hill, Lakewood, Junction Road, and North East Central
Durham are particularly encouraged to apply.

 

Members serve without compensation and must reside within the corporate City
limits.
