Durham County Manager Ruffin Announces Retirement


Durham, NC -  July 29, 2013- Durham County Manager Mike Ruffin has announced plans to retire effective January 31, 2014. The announcement came at the County Commissioners' regular session this evening. In a prepared letter to the Board, he noted that his decision to retire is family-related. Specifically, he and his wife plan to relocate to the Charlotte area to care for his aging in-laws.
 
County Manager Ruffin expressed gratitude to all 13 County Commissioners for whom he has worked during his 14-year tenure at Durham County Government. He stated, "I want to personally thank each one of you and them for the privilege to serve a county that provides an example across the country of what a high-performing county can and should be.  Indeed, we are known nationally as an innovative, forward-thinking county government that provides high-quality services to our residents."
 
Ruffin reflected on numerous successes during his tenure in the areas of economic development, fiscal management, capital investments and more but concluded by crediting employees and staff.  "I have a great staff, the best department head leadership that we have ever had in my 13 years, and a wonderful group of employees who really care about what they do.  They have been my employee family and I have enjoyed being their 'manager'."
 
Prior to coming to Durham County in November, 2000, Ruffin held similar posts in the Atlanta, Charlotte, and the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan areas during a nearly 36-year span. The Board of Commissioners will immediately begin a search process for a new county manager.
