New "City Hall This Week" Begins August 2
Southside Revitalization Update; City Hall Renovation Projects Moves Forward

City Council Receives Southside Revitalization Update
Noticeable progress is being made on the City's ambitious Southside revitalization project. The City Council received an update on the project during its July 25 work session. Community Development Director Reginald Johnson explains what progress has been made and why some goals have been revised.

Nonprofits Serving Homeless Population Qualify for New Grant Opportunity
Nonprofits serving homeless people in Durham have an opportunity to receive more funding from the state. The City of Durham will submit a joint regional application for Emergency Solutions Grant funds. The application will also include projects from local nonprofits. The purpose of the program is to provide assistance to rapidly re-house people who are currently homeless; to provide homeless prevention assistance to households who are at risk of becoming homeless; and to help with meeting the costs of emergency shelters. Durham is able to receive $130,000 through the grant program. The deadline for project applications to be submitted is August 7.

Significant Renovation Project for City Hall Moves Forward
Plans for a significant renovation project for the exterior of City Hall and the City Hall annex are moving forward. The designs are now finalized and the construction budget has been set at approximately $4.7 million. The renovations include both major structural and cosmetic work. Construction is expected to begin in December 2013 and be completed in December 2014.

Deputy Police Chief Graduates from FBI National Academy
Deputy Durham Police Chief Larry Smith is now a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Smith is deputy chief of operations, which consists of the Investigative Services Bureau, Northside Operations, and Southside Operations. During the academy, Smith attended college-level classes in leadership, statement analysis, media relations, legal issues for command level officers, and physical fitness. The academy included 216 students from 24 different countries.
