Repair Work to Begin on Ellerbe Creek in Northgate Park
Park to Remain Accessible Throughout Two-Month Project

DURHAM, N.C. - Those visiting Durham's Northgate Park will soon see stream restoration work underway, which could temporarily limit access to some of the paved trails and sidewalks throughout the course of the two-month project.

Repair work on the stream restoration along Ellerbe Creek in Northgate Park, located at 300 W. Club Blvd., is set to begin the week of November 11 and will continue through January 2014.

The City of Durham is working with the North Carolina Ecosystem Enhancement Program, who has hired Carolina Environmental Contracting, Inc., to conduct the work on the project. The repair work will be confined to the stream and the stream buffer area immediately next to the channel. Between West Club Boulevard and West Lavender Street, the work will involve grading and stabilizing the stream bank in selected areas, installing constructed riffles in the stream bed, repairing some of the in-stream structures, and planting native vegetation. In the area between West Lavender Street and the dog park, the work will only involve planting native vegetation on the stream bank.

Northgate Park, including paved trails and sidewalks, will remain open for public use during construction. The contractor will use safety barricades to temporarily limit access to paved trails and sidewalks only when necessary to move equipment. Safety fencing will also be placed around construction areas during the project.

According to Lance Fontaine, project manager with the Public Works Department's Stormwater and GIS Services Division, this work is necessary to address some areas of erosion and improve stability along Ellerbe Creek. "This stretch of stream was restored five years ago to make the creek more livable for fish and other aquatic wildlife and to reduce pollution washing downstream," Fontaine said. "Projects involving streams and natural systems sometimes require fine-tuning for optimal performance. This repair will ensure that the entire restoration project continues to provide the long-term water quality benefits that it was designed to deliver."
