Durham County Mourns Passing of Former Commissioner Becky M. Heron


Durham, NC - January 23, 2014 -
Durham County Manager Mike Ruffin announced this morning the passing of former longtime Commissioner Becky M. Heron. "Becky Heron was special and leaves an unforgettable legacy about public service that her family and all citizens in Durham County can cherish.  I will miss her and will always cherish the years I got to work with and for her."

 
Mrs. Heron was first elected in 1982 and was responsible for the motion to move Durham County Board meetings from at 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays, allowing more people to attend evening meetings. She was instrumental in developing the first land use plan for Durham County and also worked to develop the county's first animal control ordinance.
 
Commissioner Heron was selected by her peers in 1994 as the first female to chair the Board and led with distinction until 1996. In addition to her many honors, the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners named her the 1995 Outstanding County Commissioner.  In the summer of 2011, she resigned from the Board due to health concerns.
 
Funeral arrangements are currently pending. County Manager Ruffin has also ordered county flags at County buildings to fly at half-mast until the day after her services
