Resident Input Session Set for Environmental Job Training Grant Proposal

DURHAM, N.C. - Durham residents interested in environmental certifications to help them secure full-time employment now have another opportunity to get their input included in the City of Durham's grant proposal.

A fourth community interest session has been set to allow interested residents to provide their feedback into the grant proposal the City's Office of Economic and Workforce Development is submitting to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The session will be held on Monday, February 3 from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Senior Room at the Holton Career and Resource Center, 401 N. Driver St.

According to Jason Wimmer, adult employment program coordinator with the City's Office of Economic and Workforce Development, the City's chance to become funded at the highest award level of $200,000 will be improved if the community provides feedback on the grant proposal, which if awarded, will allow the City to continue providing this job training over the next three years. Since the City first offered this job training, 161 residents have received certification through the program with a third class of 30 participants scheduled to begin next month.

If the grant proposal is rewarded, the City anticipates offering another 12-week free training program to teach the skills needed to secure full-time employment in the environmental field, including assessment and cleanup. This no-cost training will provide certifications that allow participants to qualify as environmental technicians for employment in the recycling, wastewater treatment, or construction industries. The certifications would include wastewater treatment plant operator, hazardous waste operations and emergency response (HAZWOPER) 40-hour training, asbestos worker abatement, lead worker abatement, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-hour training for general industry, and first aid/CPR.

For more information contact Jason Wimmer, adult employment program coordinator with the City's Office of Economic and Workforce Development, by email at Allen.Wimmer at DurhamNC.gov<mailto:Allen.Wimmer at DurhamNC.gov> or by calling (919) 560-4965, ext. 15218.
