Durham Seeks Volunteers for Driver Street Tree Plantings
Two Dates Set to Plant 140 Trees and 1,080 Daffodil Bulbs

DURHAM, N.C. - This spring Driver Street will look remarkably different and to help make it happen, Durham is seeking volunteers to plant new trees and flower bulbs.

The City of Durham's Urban Forestry Division and Keep Durham Beautiful are teaming up with volunteers to plant 140 trees and 1,080 daffodil bulbs as part of an effort to enhance the Driver Street streetscape. The trees were specifically selected to be compatible with the City's new infrastructure in this area and suitable for a street-side environment. The trees to be planted include trident and shantung maples, lacebark elms, and pondcypress trees.

The first planting is set for Saturday, February 22 at 9 a.m. Volunteers will meet at the Holton Career & Resource Center, 401 N. Driver St., and then set out to plant 70 trees and 544 daffodil bulbs along the northern portion of Driver Street from Liberty Street to Taylor Street.

The second planting is set for Saturday, March 1 at 9 a.m. Volunteers will again meet at the Holton Career & Resource Center and then set out to plant another 70 trees and 544 daffodil bulbs along the southern portion of Driver Street from Taylor Street to Ashe Street. At each planting, volunteers will receive instructions and guidance from City staff as well as tools and gloves.

According to Tania Dautlick, executive director of Keep Durham Beautiful, the beautification efforts will be felt for years to come by the Durham residents who call this neighborhood home. "We know that when a community and its residents unite with beautification as a common purpose, transformations occur not only in the physical surroundings, but in the hearts and minds of everyone involved," Dautlick said. "This is a great opportunity to contribute and really make a difference in a part of our community that is undergoing a wonderful transformation. We hope that our residents will volunteer to join us as we bring neighbors together for this important and fun project."

The tree plantings were made possible by a $4,020 grant from Legacy Tree Fund and a $5,000 grant from UPS, which will also be sending UPS employee volunteers to the March 1st planting. The bulbs were donated by Gardens Alive.

Residents interested in volunteering for either planting should contact Dautlick directly at (919) 354-2729 or by email at Tania at keepdurhambeautiful.org<mailto:Tania at keepdurhambeautiful.org>.
