Ninth Street Parking Changes Encourage Better Access for Customers, Visitors
Parking Lot & On-Street Parking Changes Effective June 1

DURHAM, N.C. - Due to rapidly growing parking demands in the Ninth Street area, the City of Durham is implementing parking changes effective Sunday, June 1, 2014.

The 45-space parking lot located on the west side of Ninth Street, recently leased by the City, will now become paid parking from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. The rate will be $1 per hour, with an $8 maximum per day. Parking fees will be collected using a pay station on the lot.

On-street parking spaces will be designated in areas bounded by Ninth Street to the west, Green Street to the north, Broad Street to the east, and West Main Street to the south. All on-street parking within this area (except for one block of Iredell Street between West Markham Avenue and Green Street) will be going to a two-hour time limit on June 1 to encourage turn-over of these parking spaces for customers and visitors.

A recent City study showed that parking demands in the Ninth Street area were at, or very near, capacity during peak conditions. According to City Transportation Director Mark Ahrendsen, the parking changes are aimed at more effectively managing current parking in the area, and were based on study recommendations.

"Ninth Street is immensely popular and we anticipate that it will only continue to grow. With that popularity comes increasing demand for parking and our strategies will help encourage 'turn-over' of these valuable spaces for customers and visitors," Ahrendsen said. "By charging for the spaces used in the parking lot as well as imposing a two-hour limit for on-street parking in this area, we believe that more customers and visitors will be able to enjoy all that Ninth Street has to offer since they will more likely be able to find parking."

Lanier Parking Solutions, which manages City parking facilities and downtown on-street parking, will be responsible for the enforcement of on-street parking in the Ninth Street area as well as management of the Ninth Street parking lot.
