ANNOUNCEMENT
The Durham Board of County Commissioners solicits applicants to fill positions on the following citizen boards and commissions:
-Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee (4 At-Large Positions)
o This committee's primary function is to maintain the rights of residents living in adult care homes including assisted living facilities and family care homes. They serve as the link between the community and the homes, seeking to increase community involvement and, at the same time, promoting community education and awareness of the needs of the residents in these homes
* -Convention Center Authority (1 At-Large Position)
o The authority is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Durham Convention Center. The authority employs independent contractors, determines rates for facility use, formulates policies and procedures for the operation and use of the facility, administers, oversees and evaluates the performance of the management company and other contractors or any contracts pertaining to the operation, management or maintenance of the facility. It also reviews, evaluates and makes recommendations to the governing bodies regarding the annual operating budget and related reports and authorizes expenditures for operations, repairs, insurance and other costs
* -Criminal Justice Advisory Committee (2 Positions - 1 Defense Attorney, 1 Public Health Director)
o This committee was established in 1995 as a statutory requirement to participate in the state-local Criminal Justice Partnership Program grant process. The purpose of the committee is to develop a comprehensive continuum of services for the adult criminal justice system, identify services gaps, and develop intervention strategies and comprehensive solutions. The committee is advisory in nature and has no authority over any public or private entity
* -Environmental Affairs Board (1 Position - 1 Air Resources)
* This board was established in 1991, in recognition of the importance of local cooperation on environmental issues. This is an advisory board of appointed volunteer citizens to provide the City and County with expert and comprehensive advice on various environmental matters. It is also a mechanism for facilitating communication between the public and local government leaders
* -Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (3 Positions - 1 Person Under Age 18, 1 Representative of United Way or Other Non-Profit Organization, 1 Member of the Business Community)
o This council reviews the needs of Durham juveniles who are at risk of delinquency or who have been adjudicated, undisciplined, or delinquent, review and evaluate the resources available to address those needs, develop and implement a request for proposals process, and submit a written plan of action for the expenditure of juvenile sanction and prevention funds to the Durham Board of County Commissioners for its approval
* -Library Board of Trustees (3 At-Large Positions)
* This board advises the Library Director and the County Manager on issues related to the library, and acts as a liaison between Durham County Library and the community
* -Open Space and Trails Commission (1 Position - Triangle Township)
o This commission advises the City Council and the Board of Commissioners on matters relating to open space preservation and trail development while involving and educating all segments of the Durham community
* -Planning Commission (1 Position - Oak Grove/Carr Townships)
o This commission reviews recommended plans, policies and reports of the professional planning staff and makes recommendations concerning them to the governing bodies, including rezoning and zoning ordinance changes. Other duties include reviewing reports, proposing and reviewing policies and procedures for encouraging broad public input on all plans and reporting to the governing bodies on the conditions of the planning jurisdiction and the status of planning activities
-Public Health Board (1 Position - Engineer)
o This board formulates policies and procedures for the Durham County Department of Public Health. The Board works with Public Health Department administrators, clinicians, staff and our community to promote health, protect the environment and prevent disease
* -Women's Commission (2 At-Large Positions)
o This commission strives to educate the community and advise the Durham County Board of Commissioners as necessary on issues relating to the changing social and economic conditions of women in the County. The Commission develops information systems; provides advice; conducts research; hosts educational programming; analyses policy and advocates for women's issues to improve the lives of and opportunities for all women
* -Workforce Development Board (3 Positions - 2 Community-Based Organization, 1 Private Sector/Seeking Individuals in Executive Leadership)
o The purpose of the board is to facilitate, plan and coordinate workforce development resources to maximize the efforts of government, business, and education. Through collaborative partnerships, the board is the local policy organization responsible for the planning, oversight and coordination of workforce development initiatives that help support economic development in Durham
Property tax listing must be current. County and City taxes must not reflect any delinquencies
before an application is considered.
