2014 National Night Out Registration Underway
Strengthening Neighborhood Spirit and Police-Community Partnerships

Durham communities are already preparing to celebrate America’s Night Out
Against Crime and police-community partnerships based on inquiries about
the 2014 National Night Out (NNO) observance received by Durham Police
Department (DPD). NNO will be observed Tuesday, August 5, 2014 by an
estimated 37 million people and 16,000 communities across the country.

“NNO emails and calls began as early as January,” says DPD’s Senior Public
Affairs Specialist Kimberle Walker. “Officially registration opened in
April with the uploading and testing of our online registration form(s) on
the DPD website. The bulk of our NNO registrations usually pour in late
June and early July as DPD’s deadline approaches.”

Walker states that the most frequently asked NNO question so far has been
‘How do I motivate my neighbors to become engaged in crime prevention or to
help organize an NNO celebration?’ Walker adds, “I reassure these inquirers
that every effort is appreciated by the department no matter how simple or
modified the NNO activity. Actual recent examples would include
distribution of crime prevention materials to neighbors on NNO or even
decorating neighborhood mailboxes in honor of law enforcement.”

Along with the traditional outside lights and front porch vigils, most
cities and towns celebrate NNO with a variety of special citywide and
neighborhood events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, festivals,
visits from local officials and law enforcement, safety fairs, and youth
events.

The deadline to register neighborhood NNO events with DPD is July 7. Durham
NNO neighborhood coordinators must register their events with the police
department to be included in DPD promotions.

To complete an online registration with DPD or to download a DPD
registration form, go to www.durhampolice.com<http://www.durhampolice.com>
and click on the 2014 NNO logo. DPD NNO registration forms are also
available at police substations and headquarters. For more information,
contact Kimberle Walker, DPD Senior Public Affairs Specialist, at 560-4322
extension 29194.

About National Night Out
This year marks the 31st Anniversary of NNO that is spearheaded annually by
the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). NNO is designed to: (1)
heighten crime prevention awareness, (2) generate support for, and
participation in, local anticrime programs, (3) strengthen neighborhood
spirit and police-community partnerships, and (4) send a message to
criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting
back. For more information, visit the NATW website at http://natw.org/
