[Durham INC] [oldnorthdurham] Brick Gutters/Repaving

I live at 1105 N. Elizabeth and I share Peter's concern that the existing
brick gutters on Elizabeth Street will be paved over as a part of the
current resurfacing project. I have lived on this street for 14 years and
I have been amazed at the recent amount of architecturally
appropriate revitalization and new home construction as well as the related
increase in property values in this immediate area. I sincerely believe
that one of the reasons that people are so interested in living in this
neighborhood (and perhaps the main reason) is due to its historical
character. It would be such a shame that in the middle of this period of
revitalization one of the historical features that provides this character,
the brick street gutters, were covered up.
The 1100 block of N. Elizabeth was resurfaced around 2002/2003 and at that
time the lovely brick gutters on this block were completely paved over. We
had no advance warning that this was going to occur. Currently, the 1100
block is the only one in several contiguous blocks on N. Elizabeth that the
brick gutters are not exposed. It is my hope that during this project they
will be uncovered and that they will not be paved over again.
Respectfully,
Stephen Daughtry
