ANNOUNCEMENT
The Durham Board of County Commissioners solicits applicants to fill positions on the following citizen boards and commissions:


 *   Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee (3 At-Large Positions)
    *   This committee's primary function is to maintain the rights of residents living in adult care homes including assisted living facilities and family care homes. They serve as the link between the community and the homes, seeking to increase community involvement and, at the same time, promoting community education and awareness of the needs of the residents in these homes


 *   Boxing and Wrestling Commission (2 At-Large Positions)
    *   This commission supervises boxing and wrestling events.  This commission seeks to promote public trust with these events and the administration of the rules and regulations governing them.


 *   Criminal Justice Advisory Committee (1 Position - 1 Defense Attorney)
o    This committee was established in 1995 as a statutory requirement to participate in the state-local Criminal Justice Partnership Program grant process. The purpose of the committee is to develop a comprehensive continuum of services for the adult criminal justice system, identify services gaps, and develop intervention strategies and comprehensive solutions. The committee is advisory in nature and has no authority over any public or private entity


 *   Durham City-County Appearance Commission (3 At-Large Positions)
o    The mission of the commission is to cultivate excellence in design, communicate the economic, social and aesthetic value and to celebrate exemplary design within the community. Applicant shall have expertise in a design field such as architecture, landscape design, city planning, horticulture, urban design, or a related field.


 *   Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau Tourism Development Authority (1 At-Large Position)
o    This bureau actively promotes travel and tourism within the City and County.


 *   Environmental Affairs Board (1 Position - 1 Air Resources)
o    This board was established in 1991, in recognition of the importance of local cooperation on environmental issues. This is an advisory board of appointed volunteer citizens to provide the City and County with expert and comprehensive advice on various environmental matters. It is also a mechanism for facilitating communication between the public and local government leaders


 *   Historic Preservation Commission (1 Position - 1 Registered Landscape Architect)
    *   This commission acts to promote, enhance, and preserve the character and heritage of the Durham Community


 *   Homeless Services Advisory Committee (1 Position - Former Homeless Individual)
o    This committee advises the Durham Board of County Commissioners and the Durham City Council on the implementation of collaborative initiatives to prevent and end homelessness in Durham


 *   Industrial Facilities and Pollution Control Financing Authority (1 At-Large Position)
    *   This authority aids in financing (1) industrial and manufacturing facilities which provide job opportunities or better ways to help alleviate unemployment and raise below-average manufacturing wages and (2) pollution facilities for industry.


 *   Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee (2 At-Large Positions)
    *   This committee is responsive to the needs of nursing home residents and promotes community involvement and cooperation with nursing homes.  Members must be County residents and have no financial interest (directly or indirectly) in a nursing home, and no immediate family of a resident can be on the committee.

*      Open Space and Trails Commission (1 Position - Triangle Township)
o   This commission advises the City Council and the Board of Commissioners on matters relating to open space preservation and trail development while involving and educating all segments of the Durham community

*      Planning Commission (1 Position - Oak Grove/Carr Townships)
o    This commission reviews recommended plans, policies and reports of the professional planning staff and makes recommendations concerning them to the governing bodies, including rezoning and zoning ordinance changes. Other duties include reviewing reports, proposing and reviewing policies and procedures for encouraging broad public input on all plans and reporting to the governing bodies on the conditions of the planning jurisdiction and the status of planning activities

*      Public Health Board (3 Positions - 1 Engineer, 1 Physician, and 1 At-Large Position)
o   This board formulates policies and procedures for the Durham County Department of Public Health. The Board works with Public Health Department administrators, clinicians, staff and our community to promote health, protect the environment and prevent disease

*      Transportation Advisory Board (2 At-Large Positions)
o    The board serves as an advisory board to the County Manager and Board of County Commissioners on issues related to human services transportation policy matters. Members should be representatives from human service agencies, civic organizations, consumer groups, transportation providers, and citizen volunteers.

*      Women's Commission (5 Positions - At-Large Positions)
o    The purpose of the commission is to serve as the official advisory body on the status of women to the Durham Board of County Commissioners.  The purpose shall be accomplished by: Assembling information and conducting original research to identify women's status and needs; Disseminating information and educating the public on the problems, needs, and abilities of women; Recommending through resolutions appropriated actions to improve the status of women; and Serving as a referral center for existing Durham County services, organizations, programs, and other resources available to women.

Property tax listing must be current.  County and City taxes must not reflect any delinquencies
before an application is considered.

Monday, November 24, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the Commissioners' Meeting Room, second floor, Durham County Government Administrative Complex, 200 East Main Street
