Durham Cooperative Extension to Host Estate Planning Workshop

Durham, NC - November 3, 2014 -Anyone who thinks estate planning is only for the old and rich may want to attend the upcoming Estate Planning Assistance Workshop hosted by Durham County Cooperative Extension. The lunch-and-learn session will take place from 12-1p.m. on November 6, 2014, in Room C of the Durham County Health and Human Services Building.

According to Extension Agent Deborah McGiffin, often individuals and families find the topic of estate planning uncomfortable because of its association with intense subject matter with loved ones. "Estate planning is a topic that is often avoided by individuals because it deals with attitudes and feelings about death, property ownership, business arrangements, marriage, child custody issues, and family relationships that they may not be ready to contemplate." These issues are addressed in the Estate Planning Session and attendees are reminded that anyone that owns property or have dependents needs an estate plan.

"Regardless of your resources and age, most adults can benefit from estate planning which will allow a person to reach desired economic, legal, and personal objectives."

Estate planning is a clear plan of action created for the well-being and care of the entire family. Planning enables the property owner to choose from many alternatives that are available to secure their family's future should they not be around to carry out desired goals and wishes. Estate planning is also important to families who may not own a home or other property, but do have minor children or other dependents whose welfare would be in jeopardy upon a parent's or guardian's death.

Learn about estate planning in the assistance session and what important things to consider before seeking legal counsel. To reserve a seat or get more information about this workshop, contact Deborah McGiffin at (919) 560-0521.
