Community Awards Recognized Best Contributions to Durham's Appearance

DURHAM, N.C. - Last night, eight projects were honored for excellence in design and preservation of their properties at the 2014 Golden Leaf Awards for Community Appearance.

Eight Golden Leaf Awards were given at the event which was held at Full Frame Theater, located in the old Power Plant in the center of the American Tobacco Campus in downtown Durham. The awards program, sponsored by the Durham City-County Appearance Commission and Keep Durham Beautiful, Inc., honors excellence in design, preservation and stewardship of the natural and built environment.

This year, 22 entries in the following seven categories were received: Keep Durham Beautiful; Neighborhood Garden & Landscape; Hearth & Home; Adaptive Reuse, Old Building - New Design; Small-Scale Development; Large-Scale Development; and People's Choice. The winners honored were:

Judging of the Golden Leaf Awards, except the People's Choice Award, was done by an independent panel of local professionals representing architecture, landscape architecture, development, and the arts community. Selection criteria included excellence in design of a new development and/or improvement of an existing structure; raising community awareness of the value of good design and stewardship; improving the character, environment, or livability of an area; and a commitment to ongoing property maintenance in landscaping.

The new People's Choice Award was selected by public vote from the nominees under consideration for any of the award categories for 2014. With voting open until November 18, the total number of votes cast for the 21 properties competing for this award was 60,345.
